U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

No, this isn't a government-sponsored dating service for married military personnel (it gets lonely on duty). Instead, this is a cabinet-level organization within the U.S. government, dedicated to providing services for people who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Among its projects, the VA oversees medical services for veterans, as well as other projects, like grant and loan programs.

The government's involvement in the affairs of veterans (again, we're not talking romance here) dates back to the Revolutionary War. However, the current structure of the VA took shape in the late 1980s, when the department became a cabinet-level position under President George H.W. Bush.
