Hold Me Closer, Necromancer Introduction

"Hold Me Closer, Necromancer"
(sung to the tune of "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John)

Fast food worker
Flipping burgers
Says his name is Sam

Creepy guy
Wants Sam to die
He's got an evil plan

Raising the dead
It went to his head
And Sam's power he must claim

Now Sam knows it
His past wide open:
Necromancing is his game

Oh, but it feels unreal
Locked up with a werewolf girl
His powers were bound, but now they're set free
The floor is bloody, bloody…

Hold me closer, necromancer
Count on zombies coming your way
Draw a circle, pierce your finger
Blood will make your power stay—

Okay, okay, enough of that. Since the title of this book comes from one of the seminal pop hits of the 1970s, we thought it might be appropriate to pay homage to Sir Elton John by Shmoopifying his song. After all, in case you didn't pick up on this, Lish McBride's 2010 paranormal novel Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is one weird book. Zombies, werewolves, paranormal activity, bizarre blood rituals—it doesn't get much stranger than that.

But wait. What sets this story apart from The Vampire Diaries, Twilight, and other similar novels? Answer: plenty. The book literally has everything—an identity crisis, romance, violence, an evil villain, a femme fatale, undead pandas, and of course, an epic battle between necromancers, werewolves, and lawn gnomes. There's also the added bonus of waffles. Lots and lots of waffles. Seriously, what more could you want?

So when you pick up this book, forget everything you think you know about paranormal fiction. McBride breaks all the rules, so grab your lethal weapons, skateboards, and the heads of your decapitated friends, then sit back, try to relax, and enjoy Shmoop's official tour through this original comedic horror story. We swear it won't kill you.

What is Hold Me Closer, Necromancer About and Why Should I Care?

Ever felt like you don't belong? Yeah, we thought so.

So while you might not be a werewolf, necromancer, or zombie (at least that you know of), we can pretty much guarantee that you're going to relate to Hold Me Closer, Necromancer in a big way anyway. See, this book isn't just about a guy who learns that the necromancing force is strong with him—it's about searching for identity, for a place where you feel like you truly belong. And since this quest is something no one's immune from, supernatural skills or not, consider yourself down for this ride.

Heck, Hold Me Closer, Necromancer just might make you grateful for your identity struggles—unless, of course, part of your journey also includes discovering that you can raise the dead. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you.
