Speaker: Elton John

"So, goodbye, yellow brick road."

So, goodbye, yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl.
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough,
Back to the howling old owl in the woods,
Hunting the horny-back toad.
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road.

Context

This line is from the song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John and Bernie Taupin from the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973).

If you've seen The Wizard of Oz, then you'll be able to understand these lyrics pretty easily. If you remember, back in Oz, Dorothy and her friends traveled down the yellow brick road in search of a way to achieve all their dreams. But when they got there, they realized that they had everything they needed all along. Geez, Glinda, couldn't you have dropped that tidbit at the beginning of the movie?

Anyway, in this song, Elton John is waving goodbye to the yellow brick road. He's not gonna run around living the high life anymore, because he's realized he already has all the great stuff he needs. That's right, he's heading back to Kansas and back to his roots. There really is no place like home.

Where you've heard it

This quote usually comes up when people are bidding adieu to all the bad stuff in their lives. Hey, sometimes the yellow brick road isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Do you really care if people think you're pretentious when you're saying this? You're outie anyway. See ya, haters.
