Source: "A Hard Day's Night"

Speaker: John Lennon and Paul McCartney

It's been a hard day's night.

Context

This line is from the song "A Hard Day's Night," written by John Lennon, performed by the Beatles, and released on the album A Hard Day's Night (1964).

So, the Beatles had about the busiest recording schedule ever. The story goes like this: the band is walking out of the studio and Ringo Starr says, "It's been a hard day…" then he realizes he's walking out into sunlight and adds "…'s night!" Recalling this little incident later, McCartney said Starr was always kind of messing up the English language (malapropism-like), and this time, thanks to Lennon, it worked its way into a song pretty perfectly.

Where you've heard it

Hopefully, you don't know anyone who quotes Beatles lyrics on the regular. Leave that to the legends, people. But if you do hear this one, it'd be coming from someone who's worked all day and is totally exhausted—like "falling asleep standing up, must find bed now" exhausted. You're more likely to hear that someone's been "working like a dog," which is what some would call a worn-out cliché that people easily recognize and relate to.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Let's be honest—you're not Ringo Starr, or John Lennon. This one's better sung, not spoken.
