This line is from the song "Hips Don't Lie" sung by Shakira (and Wyclef Jean) from her album Oral Fixation, Vol. 2. and written by Shakira, Wyclef Jean, Jerry Duplessis, Omar Alfanno, LaTavia Parker, and Vinay Rao (2005).

According to Shakira, this line is her 'litmus test' as to a song's dance-ability. She stated, "When my body reacts physically to a song, I know, if it's a dance song, that song is done. So I used to say to my musicians, 'My hips don't lie!'"

However, others have suggested that the song has to do with the seductive appeal of dance. And they might be correct; consider how different generations have used dance to entice others. Just look at the burlesque queens of the 20s, Hula dancers, and Tina Turner.

Where you've heard it
