"We are canceling the apocalypse!"

At the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there is not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today we face the monsters that are at our door and bring the fight to them! Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!

Context

This line was spoken by Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba) in the film Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro (2013).

On the surface, it looks like Pacific Rim is just a movie about giant mech suits (called Jaegers, which is the German word for hunter) punching giant monsters that look like Godzilla's adopted children (called kaijus, or Japanese for monster). And yeah, that's basically it, as an international band of heroes led by Japanese Jaeger pilot Mako Mori and her hunky American co-pilot, Raleigh, drive back the monsters that are attacking the Pacific coasts of Asia and North America.

But the main leader is Stacker Pentecost, whose epic name is only superseded by his ability to give an epic speech. He rallies the final group of Jaegers to protect the human race from destruction, and in true heroic fashion, sacrifices himself by dropping a bomb in a portal to block the kaijus from ever invading Earth again.

Stacker canceled the apocalypse as quickly as Fox and NBC cancel our favorite TV shows.

Where you've heard it

Even though passing a test, winning a game, or giving a killer presentation isn't as epic as slicing through a giant monster with a mechanical sword, you may have used this quote to pump yourself up to accomplishing an impossible task.

Additional Notable References:

  • Along with this quote, Pacific Rim spawned the "Mako Mori Test," a way to gauge how female characters are used in films. To pass the Mako Mori test, a movie must have at least one female character with a narrative arc that doesn't support a male character's story.
  • We guess that there will be another apocalypse to cancel, as there is going to be a Pacific Rim sequel in 2018 starring John Boyega as Stacker Pentecost's son. He blew up Starkiller base in Star Wars: The Force Awakens so a few kaijus should be no problem for him.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote should be the opposite of canceled.
