Speaker: Theme Song

"Where everybody knows your name"

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came,
You wanna be where you can see our troubles are all the same.
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.

Context

This line is part of theme song of the TV show Cheers (1982-1993)

If you've never seen the intro to Cheers, go watch it. We'll wait. It's one of the most iconic TV openings of all time—mostly because of the theme song.

And at Cheers—the bar where the show takes place—everyone really does know your name. Every time Norm Peterson walks in, people shout his name in unison. But, of course, it's also a metaphor. Cheers is a welcoming place in a welcoming town (go Sox!), where everyone from a smart aleck postman to a former MLB player to a snooty professor can hang out and get along…ish.

Where you've heard it

Go ahead and listen to the theme song. Got it? Now…where have you heard it? IN YOUR HEAD FOREVER.

Yeah, it's pretty catchy.

People love to parody the Cheers intro, too. It's been covered by everything from The Simpsons to Saturday Night Live to How I Met Your Mother.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's too quaint to be pretentious. We're bumping it from 1 to 2, though, because of Frasier.
