Context

Here, we're hearing from Eve while the serpent is tempting her in the Garden of Eden. She's quoting back to the serpent what God had said to her before about the forbidden fruit.

Spoiler alert: she eats it.

Where you've heard it

Though this line isn't quoted verbatim very often (wonder why...), references to "the forbidden fruit" are everywhere (though, oddly, not in the Bible). Usually, it refers to any indulgence—physical, intellectual, whatever—that is illegal, unhealthy, or otherwise against the rules. 

Bacon while you're on a strict low cholesterol diet? Forbidden fruit, baby.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Depends what you're referring to. If you call an off-limits crush "forbidden fruit," it might sound a little melodramatic. If you call a faculty-only bathroom "forbidden fruit"? Less so.
