Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Trust Quotes

How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Quote #1

ANAKIN: Break left, fly through the guns on that tower.

Obi-Wan flies to the left of a huge tower on a Republic Cruiser. The two droid drop fighters follow.

OBI-WAN: Easy for you to say … why am I always the bait?

ANAKIN: Don't worry. I'm coming around behind you.

In the opening scene, it isn't really the dialogue that shows trust; rather, it's all of the things that Obi-Wan and Anakin do for each other that show explicit confidence in the other. Obi-Wan allows Anakin to use him as bait to draw droids into his line of fire, and he has absolute faith that Anakin will not only help him while droids tear apart his ship but that he would complete the mission without him if necessary. This is one of the only scenes that depicts their close relationship and how they rely on each other.

Quote #2

OBI-WAN: Anakin, be careful of your friend Palpatine.

ANAKIN: Be careful of what?

OBI-WAN: He has requested your presence.

ANAKIN: What for?

OBI-WAN: He would not say.

ANAKIN: He didn't inform the Jedi Council? That's unusual, isn't it?

OBI-WAN: All of this is unusual, and it's making me feel uneasy. You're probably aware that relations between the Council and the Chancellor are stressed.

ANAKIN: I know the Council has grown weary of the Chancellor's power, mine also for that matter. Aren't we all working together to save the Republic? Why all this distrust?

OBI-WAN: The Force grows dark, Anakin, and we are all affected by it. Be wary of your feelings.

Due to their history, Anakin is too trusting of the Chancellor, and Obi-Wan is trying to advise him to put up his guard. This is relatively unique in a movie filled with distrust and suspicion—why does Anakin blindly accept the Chancellor's supposedly good intentions?

Quote #3

PALPATINE: I need your help, son.

ANAKIN: What do you mean?

PALPATINE: I fear the Jedi. The Council keeps pushing for more control. They're shrouded in secrecy and obsessed with maintaining their autonomy … ideals I find simply incomprehensible in a democracy.

ANAKIN: I can assure you that the Jedi are dedicated to the values of the Republic, sir.

PALPATINE: Nevertheless, their actions will speak more loudly than their words. I'm depending on you.

ANAKIN: For what? I don't understand.

PALPATINE: To be the eyes, ears, and voice of the Republic.

This is where things start to get fishy. Anakin trusts Palpatine. Anakin mostly trusts the Jediat least, until the Chancellor starts pouring poisonous thoughts about them into Anakin's ears.

Quote #4

OBI-WAN: (takes a deep breath) The Council wants you to report on all of the Chancellor's dealings. They want to know what he's up to.

ANAKIN: They want me to spy on the Chancellor? That's treason!

OBI-WAN: We are at war, Anakin. The Jedi Council is sworn to uphold the principles of the Republic, even if the Chancellor does not.

ANAKIN: Why didn't the Council give me this assignment when we were in session?

OBI-WAN: This assignment is not to be on record. The Council asked me to approach you on this personally.

ANAKIN: The Chancellor is not a bad man, Obi-Wan. He befriended me. He's watched out for me ever since I arrived here.

OBI-WAN: That is why you must help us, Anakin. Our allegiance is to the Senate, not to its leader who has managed to stay in office long after his term has expired.

If only the Council had approached Anakin first, maybe this wouldn't seem like such a suspicious thing to ask of him. But now, they are basically playing into Palpatine's plan to warp Anakin's perspective of the political intrigues that are going on, and poor Anakin is just lost in the middle.

Quote #5

OBI-WAN: Anakin did not take to his assignment with much enthusiasm.

YODA: Too much under the sway of the Chancellor, he is. Much anger there is in him. Too much pride in his powers.

MACE: It's very dangerous, putting them together. I don't think the boy can handle it. I don't trust him.

OBI-WAN: He'll be all right. I trust him with my life.

MACE: Wish I did.

Already, the heads of the Jedi Council are suspicious of Anakin. Do you think it's because of his close association with the Chancellor or because they can sense his underlying anger and pride? Which one makes him less trustworthy in their eyes?

Quote #6

ANAKIN: I sense … there are things you are not telling me.

Padmé is startled at this.

PADMÉ: I sense there are things you are not telling me.

Padmé smiles. Anakin is a little embarrassed.

PADMÉ: Hold me … like you did by the lake on Naboo, so long ago … when there was nothing but our love. … No politics, no plotting … no war.

See, most couples here would probably want to hash out the things they aren't telling each other. Is this a sign of trust or of mutual acceptance that they will have secrets between them? Or, worse, is it denial?

Quote #7

PALPATINE: You must sense what I have come to suspect … the Jedi Council want control of the Republic … they're planning to betray me.

ANAKIN: I don't think

PALPATINE: Anakin, search your feelings. You know, don't you?

ANAKIN: I know they don't trust you …

PALPATINE: Or the Senate … or the Republic … or democracy, for that matter.

ANAKIN: I have to admit my trust in them has been shaken.

PALPATINE: Why? They asked you to do something that made you feel dishonest, didn't they?

This scene shows what a skillful manipulator Palpatine is. He's successfully asking Anakin to do the same exact things the Jedi Council is asking him to do … but making it look like he's the one in the right, while the Jedi are dastardly and conniving. It's masterful, really. He manages to gain Anakin's trust while eroding his faith in the Jedi. Bravo, you evil mastermind, you.

Quote #8

ANAKIN: I wish I knew. More and more, I get the feeling that I am being excluded from the Council. I know there are things about the Force that they are not telling me.

PALPATINE: They don't trust you, Anakin. They see your future. They know your power will be too strong to control. Anakin, you must break through the fog of lies the Jedi have created around you. Let me help you to know the subtleties of the Force.

Anakin isn't that far off base with his suspicion of the Jedi Council, but he's just playing into Palpatine's plot to separate him from his mentors.

Quote #9

ANAKIN: Master, the Chancellor is very powerful. You will need my help if you are going to arrest him.

MACE: For your own good, stay out of this affair. I sense a great deal of confusion in you, young Skywalker. There is much fear that clouds your judgment.

ANAKIN: I must go, Master.

MACE: No. If what you told me is true, you will have gained my trust, but for now, remain here.

Ooooh, he's gained Mace's elusive trust. What a treat. Telling someone like Anakin to sit still and wait things out is like a broken pencil: pointless.

Quote #10

PADMÉ: I don't believe what I'm hearing … Obi-Wan was right. You've changed.

ANAKIN: I don't want to hear any more about Obi-Wan. The Jedi turned against me. Don't you turn against me.

PADMÉ: I don't know you anymore. Anakin, you're breaking my heart. I'll never stop loving you, but you are going down a path I can't follow.

ANAKIN: Because of Obi-Wan?

PADMÉ: Because of what you've done … what you plan to do. Stop, stop, no. Come back! I love you.

ANAKIN: (seeing Obi-Wan) Liar!

PADMÉ: No!

This scene is the culmination of Anakin's complete collapse of faith in not only his mentor but the love of his life as well. In scenes that got cut from the final edit of the film, George Lucas had played up Anakin's suspicions that Padmé was having an affair with Obi-Wan, so when he emerges from Padmé's ship, all of his fears are confirmed.
