San Jose State University

About Me

Intro

I'm the oldest university in the CSU system, but don't get it twisted—I'm no shriveled-up granny. I'm located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Ever heard of it? It's only the technological capital of the world. Tons of my graduates go on to snag super cool jobs in the tech industry and work for some of the most successful companies in the biz. If that doesn't please your parents, I don't know what will.

With eight different colleges on campus, I'm sure to have a major that fits your passions and goals. My business school is huge, my engineering school is top-notch, and I have excellent programs in design, journalism, education, performing arts, psychology, social work, and even aviation.

I pride myself on being one of the most culturally diverse universities out there. I'm a melting pot of people, you could say. (Not literally. I'm totally against cannibalism.) College is all about trying new things and meeting new people. As the central technological hub of Silicon Valley, I'm the perfect place to do that.

Is your grandmother a computer whiz? Didn't think so.

Hometown

You can find me in the Valley. No, not the "like, totally" Valley. I mean Silicon Valley, home to the headquarters of major tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo!, Intel, HP, Adobe, Netflix, and eBay, just to name a few. (Are you impressed yet?)

I'm smack in the middle of downtown San Jose. Campus is about forty-five minutes from San Francisco—close enough for a day trip to the city, and even closer to the Monterey Bay and its gorgeous oceanside scenery. I've got the whole package.

Body Type

I'm a bit on the meatier side with over 25,000 undergrads and around 5,000 grad students, all covering nineteen blocks of the city. I'll be honest…most classes are pretty large (generally around thirty students, but lectures can be larger), and you might have to duke it out with a fellow student for a seat in a general ed class. At least my upper division classes are nice and small, though.

Current Living Situation

Out-of-town freshies have to live in the dorms. If you're into the old-school vibe, the Bricks are for you. These two-story buildings are probably similar to the dorms your parents stayed in—kind of grungy with long hallways and community bathrooms (say goodbye to privacy). Don't be afraid to turn your music up and leave your door open; this is how most Brick-goers mingle.

Joe West is similar in style but ten stories tall. If you're used to a certain level of luxury, the Campus Village Buildings are newer towers where you share an apartment with up to twelve people. Who called the shower first?

If you're not a freshman (thank goodness that's over with) and want to live close to campus, there are tons of apartments scattered throughout downtown. Apartments west and north of campus are near the bar scene, and those south and east are in quieter neighborhoods. You'll find most of the social fraternities and sororities on Eleventh Street, so pack your toga and enough red cups to go around.

Relationship Status

Fresno State is my biggest rival when it comes to football, but I also love to hate Stanford. We'll be on top one day, guys. Just wait.

You should apply to me if...

you want to learn in the land of opportunity.
