Shakespeare Words
Shakespearean, not stirred.
If Shakespeare wrote it, we've Shmooped it.
Deafening
Popularized in Henry IV Part 2“ | Wilt thou upon the high and giddy mast | |
| Seal up the shipboy's eyes, and rock his brains | ||
| In cradle of the rude imperious surge | ||
| And in the visitation of the winds, | ||
| Who take the ruffian billows by the top, | ||
| Curling their monstrous heads and hanging them | ||
| With deafening clamor in the slippery clouds | ” |
Yeah, Shakespeare's a smart dude, but this one probably wasn't too tough to come up with. Something that's deafening deafens you (figuratively, that is); just like something that's infuriating infuriates you (less figuratively). |
