A Worn Path Trivia

Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge

We're willing to bet most of you don't have any friends named Eudora. Are we right? The name wasn't among the top 1000 most common baby names in 1909 when Welty was born, nor has it cracked the top 1000 most popular names in the US any time recently. But it seems to suit Ms. Welty both in its meaning (good gift) and origin (Greek mythology).

Welty never married or had any children, but she did write one children's book. It's about a parrot named Arturo who lives in a shoe store and discusses appropriate footwear with many other birds.

Meriwether Lewis, one half of the Lewis and Clark dynamic duo, was shot to death on the Natchez Trace when he was thirty-five. He was in Tennessee, not Mississippi, but still, it's the same path Phoenix plods along. Some argue he committed suicide, but others claim he was murdered, which sounds like material for a Southern gothic in its own right.

Apparently Eudora Welty made really good potato salad.
