Character Role Analysis

Margo Channing / Eve Harrington

Margo and Eve have a lot in common: They're in love with the theater, and they're both great actresses. Eve looks at first almost like Margo's mini-me; as Birdie says, she studies Margo like she's a book or a blueprint. Once we get to see what Eve's really about, the differences between the two characters begin to emerge.

Unlike Eve, Margo worked her way up in the theater to become the legend she is. She has depth, she's authentic, she has friends. Eve's life is based on lies, and she fakes her way to stardom. She makes Margo, with all her faults and diva behavior, look like the much better and more likable person—someone who deserves the fame that she achieved.
