Character Analysis
Gilbert is Cass Mastern's older brother. He educates Cass, and gets him started in the Plantation business. Jack says several times in the book that he understands Gilbert, but not Cass. You could write an interesting paper around these moments – trying to figure out why Gilbert is accessible to Jack, and why Cass is not.
