Alligator Bayou Chapter 4 Summary

  • Once Calo catches up with Patricia, he says that Francesco would never turn away Mrs. Rogers, but Patricia points out that the white lady is proud and wouldn't give Francesco her money anymore.
  • Then Patricia pokes at Calo for kissing up to the white woman, saying that acting like that won't help her change.
  • Totally confused, Calo asks Patricia if she's mad at him. He really doesn't get what she's talking about.
  • They walk along past Brushy Bayou and have a conversation about how Calo got to America. Patricia tells him that "colored" kids can't go to church school, so they formed a different public school in the basement.
  • Along the path, they run into Patricia's brother, Charles, and his friends Rock and Ben, who may or may not be very nice. They circle Calo and tell Patricia to go home.
  • Fortunately, Calo has some self-confidence and knows how to fight, so he doesn't cower. He answers Charles's questions and is accepted for the time being. On the other hand, he's totally tricked into having to go alligator hunting with them at some point. Gulp.
