Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening)’s Timeline and Summary

Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening)’s Timeline and Summary

  • Carolyn is in a perfectly horrific marriage with Lester, and she's super critical of everything he does. Also, she disapproves of the way her daughter thinks/acts/dresses. Basically, anything she can't control directly is a big disappointment. Her flowers, however, look amazing.
  • She's annoyed at Lester's mid-life crisis/reinvention, since it prompts him to quit his job, trade in their sensible car for a Firebird, smoke pot in the garage… you get the picture. She doesn't appreciate the disruption to the perfect family picture she's trying to paint.
  • Carolyn ends up getting pseudo-revenge on Lester when she starts an affair with Buddy Kane, and it seems like she might be contemplating more serious retaliation when she starts going to the shooting range.
  • She seems like she's thinking about killing Lester on the night that Frank beats her to the punch. But, of course, when she finds him dead, she goes upstairs to cry among his clothes, burying her face in them for his scent.
