Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika Act 2, Scene 1 Summary

February 1986

  • Prior and Belize stand outside a rundown funeral parlor on the Lower East Side. They've just attended the funeral of a drag queen friend of theirs. Prior thinks the funeral was tacky, but Belize says it was glamorous.
  • Belize notes Prior's strange outfit: a black ensemble complete with a dark scarf that's reminiscent of biblical prophet's hood. Belize thinks his friend looks like Morticia from the Addams Family.
  • Prior talks about how his eyes are messed up, and he feels like he's going blind.
  • He goes on to tell Belize about the dreams he's been having about the angel, saying he thinks they're more than just dreams. Prior thinks the angel really did come to him and that she put a book of prophecy inside his body.
  • Belize thinks his friend is going crazy.
