Character Analysis

William is the country bumpkin who is in love with Touchstone's girl, Audrey. When William comes to visit Audrey in Act 5, Scene 1, Touchstone makes fun of him for being simple and tells him to get lost, or else: " I/ will kill thee a hundred and fifty ways. Therefore/ tremble and depart" (5.1.56-58). (Touchstone excels at the art of trash talk.) William's not a bad guy and he certainly doesn't want any trouble, which is why he replies "God rest you merry sir" and exits the stage.
