Jesse Givens Timeline and Summary

  • Jesse and Rise have always been best friends, but lately Jesse's been noticing some changes in his buddy—and he's worried.
  • At a meeting of the Counts, Rise says he's thinking about beating up a shop owner that accused a friend of armed robbery. Jesse is shocked.
  • Jesse agrees to make a book about Rise's life. He thinks that if he gets it right, maybe Rise will come to his senses and start acting like himself again.
  • Jesse and Rise visit Mason in jail. Jesse notices that Rise seems scared, though he won't admit it.
  • Jesse learns that Rise is thinking about dealing drugs; he freaks out big time.
  • Jesse's starting to notice that all his encounters with Rise are really unpleasant. He enjoys hanging out with his other friend, C.J., much more.
  • Jesse works on Rise's book. He relives some of the highlights of their friendship as he draws scenes from their childhood.
  • Jesse almost gets shot in a drive-by. None of his friends are killed, though his pal Benny is shot.
  • Rise invites Jesse to meet some new people, so Jesse heads to a dodgy underworld club where it's clear Rise is hanging out with the criminal element.
  • At the club, Jesse meets Tania, a prostitute, though he doesn't know she's a prostitute. He draws her picture and they agree to become boyfriend/girlfriend.
  • Jesse agonizes over what's going on with Rise, but he feels like he doesn't have anyone to talk to.
  • Jesse and his friends get confronted by some white cops who are super racist.
  • Jesse's dad punches him in the face, so Jesse heads to the doctor, who says there won't be permanent damage.
  • Sidney calls Jesse and says there's supposed to be a big confrontation between the Counts and the Diablos.
  • Then Rise calls and tells Jesse that he's arranged a meeting between the Counts and the Diablos for the following day. Jesse freaks out.
  • Against his better judgment, Jesse goes to the meeting. The Diablos never show, and Rise says he's calling off the turf war. Jesse's relieved, but he thinks something feels off.
  • On the way home from the meeting, Jesse and C.J. come across the aftermath of another shooting.
  • That night, Sidney shows up to take Jesse to the police station for questioning. (Turns out Rise was using the Counts for an alibi, and during the meeting, some of the Diablos had been murdered.) Eventually everyone's released, though.
  • Jesse decides that Rise needs to finish his own book—he can't do it for him. He recognizes that the "old" Rise is dead.
  • Rise is leaving town, and he comes to say goodbye to Jesse and the guys. Rise is shot by Little Man, then he dies in Jesse's arms.
  • Jesse's super bummed at Rise's funeral, but he's also relieved in a way. He knows that he and C.J. can just focus on their art without having to worry about all that awful gang stuff.
