Glen Waddell Timeline and Summary

  • Earle introduces Glen to Anney when Glen is seventeen. He's a nervous kid from a well-to-do family, and he likes the idea of being part of the tough Boatwright clan.
  • Glen and Anney date for two years, and he asks her to marry him. She agrees and immediately gets pregnant.
  • While Anney is in labor, Glen molests Bone in the hospital parking lot.
  • After Anney has a stillborn that leaves her unable to have more children, Glen becomes a generally angry and malicious person. He moves the family away from the other Boatwrights.
  • Glen isn't able to keep a job as a result of his temper, and blames the girls and Anney for not believing in him.
  • Glen is always moving the family to houses that are far away and that they cannot afford.
  • When Glen catches Bone running in the house, he drags her to the bathroom and furiously beats her with a belt while Anney screams outside the door. Later he tells Anney that he lost control because Bone said that she hated him.
  • Glen starts regularly beating and molesting Bone.
  • Glen's relationship with his father and his brothers is pretty uncomfortable: all of them are more successful than him, and they look down on Anney and the girls. Whenever Glen is in front of his father, he gets nervous and stutters.
  • When Bone's uncles see what Glen has been doing to Bone, they beat him up. Anney leaves him, but after a while it seems like she will probably go back to him.
  • Glen shows up to Alma's while Bone is there and blames Bone for Anney leaving him. He punches her, breaks her arm, and rapes her.
  • Anney walks in and as she is dragging Bone away Glen begs Anney to kill him.
  • Glen and Anney disappear.
