• Isa gets summoned to Shah Jahan's palace and is asked to build the Temple of Light for the Shah's beloved Mumtaz Mahal.
• Isa and Jahanara preside over the building of the Taj Mahal together over the course of several years. They fall in love but don't do anything about it.
• Jahanara seeks out Isa's help after she gets a brutal beating from her husband. He nurses her back to health.
• Isa and Jahanara go to Delhi together to retrieve the marble needed for the mausoleum, and they finally confess their love for one another.
• Shah Jahan plots a weekend getaway for Isa and Jahanara, knowing that they need a little tryst.
• As it becomes more apparent to Shah Jahan that his daughter is in love with Isa, he concocts a plan that will allow the two of them to secretly be together.
• Isa quietly buys a house belonging to the Shah that is connected via secret tunnel to Jahanara's bedroom.
• Isa and Jahanara have a baby girl and name her Arjumand.
• By this point, the Taj Mahal is halfway done. Building continues.
• The Taj is finally completed when Arjumand turns seven years old. There are great celebrations.
• Balkhi attempts to kill Jahanara and Arjumand, but they flee to the safety of Isa's home.
• Isa and Jahanara tell Arjumand that Isa is her true father, and everyone's pretty happy…for a minute.
• Isa and Arjumand flee south to avoid an oncoming battle.
• Jahanara is imprisoned.
• Isa and Arjumand are held captive by the Sultan of Bijapur and are forced to build a mosque for him.
• After five years, Jahanara escapes and comes up with a plan to free her family. She bargains with the Sultan of Bijapur and Shivaji.
• Isa, Jahanara, and Arjumand get to spend a week together as a family by the sea…before Jahanara has to leave again and Isa has to go back to work finishing the mosque.
• The Sultan of Bijapur is killed in a battle with Aurangzeb, so Isa and Arjumand go free.
• Jahanara sends Nizam and Ladli to go to meet Isa and Arjumand, she escapes (again), and they all happily reunite in Calcutta.
• Our protagonists all grow old together in their little fishing village.
• Isa dies a happy old man.
