Blood Red Road Chapter 5 Quotes

How we cite the quotes:
(Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote 1

A animal will do anythin to live. Even chew off its own leg if it's caught in a trap. That's the red hot. An I'm gonna hafta learn to use it if I wanna survive in the Cage. (5.130)

Saba calls her anger "the red hot." Sometimes the red hot proves to be an asset, like when she's fighting to the death inside a steel cage. Sometimes the red hot proves to be a hindrance, like when she tries to team up with the Free Hawks. As you might imagine, her ability to control these emotions becomes a key part of her coming-of-age experience.

Quote 2

They live fer this, says the Cage Master. They're worse than animals. That's what too much chaal does to you. (5.120)

Chaal users get compared to animals quite a bit in Blood Red Road, but we think we have a comparison that might be more accurate: they're like zombies. It all fits the bill, right? Plus, we know that there's not much in the way of brains to go around here in Hopetown.

Quote 3

There's partly et food spread out all over the table in a big mess—flatbread an platters of roast meat an boiled pigeon eggs an jugs of grog. (5.51)

This is quite the image of decadence, especially when you contrast it with the meager homestead where Saba and Emmi grew up. Hopetown is a place where the powerful have a lot and the weak have nothing, except for some chaal cravings and a hankering for cage combat.
