Blood Red Road Chapter 8 Quotes
How we cite the quotes:
(Chapter.Paragraph)
Quote 1
Sometimes Pa used to tell us about the big Wrecker cities that sprawled over leagues an leagues. [...] The remains of a vast city, spread out across this plateau in the mountains. (8.147)
Saba has passed through a few small Wrecker cities at this point, but nothing compares to the monstrosity she now finds herself in. She didn't believe places like this ever existed. Although we don't get the details of the Wreckers' fall from grace, these brief glimpses of the old world reveal a massive conflict between humans and nature.
Quote 2
I cain't stand it if I cain't see the sky. No matter how bad Silverlake was, at least you could count on big skies. (8.720)
If there's one thing Saba hates, it's the feeling of constraint. Part of that might be a result of her six-month stint as a cage fighter (talk about confinement), but part of it just goes back to her fundamental explorative nature.
Quote 3
Story goes that a long time ago, back in Wrecker times, they put some kinda poison into the lake, says Ike. It killed off everythin. Essept the wurms. They grew. (8.930)
Here's another hint as to what went down with those Wreckers. This passage implies that pollution played a big part in the apocalypse, which certainly would explain the whole "Wrecker" nickname. Y'know—they wrecked the planet.
Quote 4
I said...that Lugh sounds too good to be true. (8.53)
Now ain't this the truth, Jack. We love Lugh and all, but Saba needs to lose her idealized view of her bro if they're ever going to develop an adult relationship.
Quote 5
Don't say that, he says. Don't ever say that. You are somethin, Saba. Somethin good an strong an true. With him or without him. (8.67)
Even after everything she's been through, Saba still thinks she isn't as good of a person as Lugh. It's a real drain on her confidence. Luckily, she has Jack around, who rightfully points out all of the amazing stuff she has done over the time he's known her.
Quote 6
They're gonna need you, Saba, he says. Lugh an Emmi. There'll be others too, many others, who will look to you, an you'll hafta stand alone. (8.1272)
Nothing like a good old "Ghost Dad" dream to bring a hero's quest into full focus, huh? Here, we get the sense that Saba's coming-of-age experience has actually only just begun, and she will need to mature even more if she hopes to live up to the challenges that are in her future.
Quote 7
Then I ended up in Hopetown [...] an suddenly there's a chance an do somethin decent in my life [...] It's fate, like I said. (8.819)
Once again, Jack brings up fate when he talks to Saba. That can't be coincidental, right? We're not going to say that their relationship was "written in the stars" or anything, but there's definitely something deeper going on.
Quote 8
A big waterwagon 'ud come around twice a day, once in the mornin an once in the afternoon, an fill everybody's waterskins. There's chaal in that water. (8.790)
In case it isn't clear, this passage states that the King drugs slaves with chaal in order to make them more subservient when actually harvesting the chaal. That's a grody piece of business, isn't it? If the King had his way, he'd get the entire planet hooked on the stuff if it bought him another "King From Throughout History" cosplay outfit.
Quote 9
I hold my hands away from me, stiff. At first, from shock. But now to keep 'em away from Jack. They're itchin to touch him. All over. (8.507)
That didn't take much, huh? As much as Saba wants to hide from her feelings, or even pretend that they don't exist, she's not going to be able to withstand Jack's advances. And why should she? What's keeping her from just diving straight into the deep end?
Quote 10
A flutter in my belly. Jack gone. Not bein able to see him no more. I hadn't really thought about it before now. What might happen after we find Lugh. (8.706)
Well, we've got a spoiler for you, Saba: you're going to get really, really sad. Like, you're going to relate to Adele lyrics for the first time. That's how sad you're going to be. Given that this is Saba's first experience with romance, however, we'll cut her a break for being so out of touch with her feelings.
Quote 11
Sometimes the Tonton hang you, other times they'll cut her head off an put it on a spike. (8.749)
We wouldn't call that a warm welcome, would you? As Saba and company get closer to the Freedom Fields—the King's home base—they see increasingly disturbing evidence of Tonton power.
Quote 12
An over the last couple of years, he started exapandin his empire. Everywhere I bin lately, I'm havin to dodge Tonton or I'm hearin about 'em. (8.809)
Apparently, the King has only been expanding his power in recent years, as the chaal trade has spread throughout the land. Unfortunately, now that this process has begun, it's going to be hard to stop it again—even if they manage to take the King out.
Quote 13
You wanna know what's wrong? It's this...crowd of people trailin behind me, slowin me down, an I'm sick of it, that's what's wrong! (8.243)
Although Saba accepts the company of her fellow warriors, there are still many times when she'd rather do everything on her own. We certainly respect her for this sense of independence on a certain level, but even she knows that she'll need all the help she can get.
