Blood Red Road Chapter 9 Quotes
How we cite the quotes:
(Chapter.Paragraph)
Quote 1
The King requires your life in payment, says Pinch. It's simple. You give yourself to him and they all go free. Your precious brother, your innocent little sister and your friends. (9.699)
And here we go, people—the moment of truth. Saba has proven time and time again that she's willing to risk (and even sacrifice) her life for Lugh, but now it's about Emmi. You know, Emmi—that annoying little sister Saba has been complaining about since we've met her. This is the moment that Saba finally proves her love for her sister by willingly giving up her own life to save hers.
Quote 2
She was here because of me, I says. I had to be the one. It's right that it was me. (9.397)
A mercy killing is a tough thing to even think about, if you ask us, so we'd say that Saba's decision to take responsibility for Epona is great evidence of her growing maturity.
Quote 3
Then he says, You look different.
I know, I says. My hair.
No, he says. It's more'n that. It's...you. You've changed, Saba. (9.456-458)
Lugh has experienced a lot of hardship over the past year and has surely matured a lot, but Saba has gone on an adventure that defied all expectations. She's been forced to step up to the plate, and Lugh can already tell that she's been hitting home runs.
Quote 4
Hey, he says, what're you doin back there? I ain't got a clue where we're goin. Git on up here an lead the way. (9.1123)
See what's happening here? It's the reverse of where we started, with Lugh giving up his position to let Saba lead the way. That's huge for both parties, but it's an especially powerful tribute to Saba's internal growth.
Quote 5
I had a dream, I says. The night before the fire.
You dreamed where to find me? (9.1013-1014)
With all this talk about stars, we almost forget to mention that Saba herself seems to be able to predict the future in her dreams. Trippy, right? Looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Quote 6
It's a land of plenty. Lush an beautiful. Like Pa told us it used to be back in Wrecker times. Paradise, he called it. (9.128)
The irony, of course, is that "paradise" has been subverted to supply the world with chaal. Think about how many people could live in this lush valley, or how much food could be grown there. It's such a waste.
Quote 7
Jack's diversion.
It's a flood.
The end of Pinch's previous crop. (9.331-333)
It's easy to miss out on this fact, but given that this is the only place where chaal is grown, Jack has just effectively destroyed the world's supply of the drug. We're not mad. Do you think things will change now? Why or why not?
Quote 8
Suddenly I see him. Not the Jack of the jokes an the flirtin and the shyin away. The real Jack. The...truth of him. The stillness at the heart of him. (9.74)
Saba frequently refers to the "stillness" at the center of Jack. That's kind of odd given that the dude is a charming, loquacious con artist, right? More than anything, this gives us the sense that Saba is looking past Jack's exterior and truly getting to know the person underneath.
Quote 9
I grab his face an kiss him on the lips. (9.91)
Hubba hubba. This passage doesn't have a lot going on textually speaking, but it's important because it's the first time Saba takes an active role in her romance with Jack.
Quote 10
I train the looker on Pinch. He's ridin a big white stallion. An he's dressed like he was last night. [...] But it hangs down in burnt an tattered shreds. (9.613)
That's some symbolism if we've ever seen it. With his chaal fields destroyed, the King still holds on to the vestiges of his status, but he no longer has power over the masses. In the same way, we see his fancy regal robes torn to unrecognizable shreds. We'd almost feel bad—if the dude weren't, you know, a monster.
Quote 11
DeMalo stands in front of me. He drops my bow and quiver at my feet.
What...what are you doing? asks Pinch. (9.762-763)
DeMalo is a tough dude to pin down. Saba feels simultaneously intrigued and repulsed by him, but even she is shocked when he abandons the King in his moment of need, allowing the good guys to get a much needed win. Hmm. Bet we're going to learn more about this dude in the sequel.
Quote 12
Lugh glances around. I never knew you had so many friends, he says to me. Thank you. Thank ya'll. (9.432)
Oof—we know you meant it as a compliment, Lugh, but that sounds like a diss to us. Jokes aside, we're pretty sure that all of these folks love Saba enough to count Lugh as a friend, too.
