Character Role Analysis

Mr. Alden (Grandfather)

Mr. Alden isn't actually a bad guy, but the Alden kids spend most of the book under the assumption that he is. In fact, running away from their grandfather—who's rumored to be a big meanie—is what propels them into their boxcar-chic lifestyle. Eventually, when the children come face to face with Mr. Alden, they realize he's not their antagonist at all, and they go off to live happily ever after with him.
