  • Dr. Moore hires Henry to do work around his house. On Henry's first day, the doctor secretly follows him back to the woods out of curiosity.
  • The doctor returns to the woods a few nights later. While he's snooping around, he steps on a stick, and when the children's dog barks, the doctor realizes they are living in a boxcar.

  • Dr. Moore meets the other Alden children when Henry brings them to help pick cherries in the doctor's orchard.
  • Another day, Dr. Moore gives Henry time off to go to Field Day. He secretly watches from the stands, laughing to himself when Henry and Mr. Alden meet. The doctor is still the only one who knows that Mr. Alden is Henry's grandfather.
  • One night, when Violet becomes very ill, Henry comes to Dr. Moore for help. Dr. Moore races to the boxcar without even asking Henry where it is.
  • Dr. Moore invites the Alden children to stay at his house while Violet recovers.
  • The doctor informs Mr. Alden that he's the children's grandfather. He tells Mr. A. that he should probably keep his identity a secret so the children aren't afraid.
  • Eventually, Mr. Alden's true identity is revealed. When Violet recovers, the kids leave Dr. Moore's house and move in with Mr. Alden.
