Bart Rangely Timeline and Summary

  • Bart's life is turned upside down when his father moves out to be with his young mistress. Things have been tough because his mom and dad still work in the same office, which happens to be located at the World Trade Center.
  • About a week after he starts eighth grade, Bart comes down with the flu. His mother stays home from work to tend to him, and this winds up sparing her life since she's not at the World Trade Center when the planes fly into the buildings.
  • Bart is overwhelmed by his feelings of grief and anger but feels like he can't really talk to his mom because she's super depressed.
  • Bart gets another piece of bad news: An anonymous donor is going to pay for him to attend Baileywell, a fancy boys' boarding school. He worries he will be bullied.
  • Bart's worries are proven correct, and from the first day, he's tormented by Tyro Bergen, whose pranks include everything from light teasing to physical violence. Bart doesn't tell anybody about what's happening.
  • One day, when he's had enough, Bart goes a little crazy and vandalizes Tyro's car. He's caught in the act.
  • It's decided that Bart's penance will be community service. He begins volunteering at the hospital, where he spends time with a sick ten-year-old named Nola.
  • Bart and Nola grow close, but unfortunately, Nola also grows sicker.
  • When Nola's on her deathbed, Bart finds out that she's Tyro Bergen's sister. He wonders if Nola's death will bring him and Tyro closer together.
  • Following Nola's death, Bart is finally able to express some of his emotions to his mother. It's therapeutic.
  • Incidentally, Nola's death did not bring Bart and Tyro closer together. Instead they get in a fistfight and Bart is expelled.
  • After a semester of home schooling, Bart goes back to public school and then on to live a normal life. Eventually he gets married and has two kids.
