Corinne Rangely Timeline and Summary

  • Corinne's life is turned upside down when her husband leaves her for another woman. She keeps his abandonment a secret from her family, which puts her son Bart in an awkward position.
  • That position grows even more awkward when Bart's dad dies in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Corinne herself barely survives, saved only by Bart's flu, which keeps her home from work that day.
  • Corinne grows super depressed and withdrawn, and she can't go to work until a new office is set up. Meanwhile, she lets a lot of things slide—which leaves Bart to sort of fend for himself. At one point, he actually researches PTSD online.
  • A bright spot in the tragedy is when Bart receives a scholarship to Baileywell, a boys' boarding school. Corinne has always wanted Bart to go to school there, but she couldn't afford it.
  • Around the same time that Bart starts school, Corinne goes back to work at her new office. She seems to be feeling much better.
  • Corinne is completely oblivious to the torment Bart endures at school. Bart doesn't tell her about the bullying, and he lets her believe that he has friends.
  • Finally, she learns everything from Bart after he's caught vandalizing Tyro's car. Instead of getting mad, she rallies and lets Dr. Bratton have a piece of her mind at the school meeting.
  • Corinne has some concerns about Bart's volunteer work, which will take place at a hospital; she's worried he might catch something serious.
  • She's relieved when Bart befriends Nola. After Nola becomes even more ill, she takes Bart to the hospital for one final visit.
  • The hospital visit seems to have finally opened the door for Corinne and Bart to talk about Mr. Rangely's death. It's a moment of personal growth for mother and son.
  • Fast-forward into the future a year or two later. Corinne remarries. Yay.
