For Rick, looking at Victor Laszlo is like gazing into a funhouse mirror.

The guy he sees is basically who he used to be. It's a distorted version of the person he is today. He recognizes the self-assurance, the sense of righteousness he used to count among his own bag of tricks. And while he may not show it much on the surface, it's the fact that he comes back into contact with such inspiring zeal that finally forms a crack in Rick's heavily guarded exterior.
