  • A marquis named Walter lives a life of ease and power in Salucia, revered by his people and nobles.
  • Troubled by his continued bachelorhood, Walter's nobles urge him to marry. Walter agrees to do so on the condition that he be allowed free rein in choosing his wife, and that the nobles honor her without complaint.
  • Taking a fancy to Grisilde, Walter marries her on the condition that she obey him in all things.
  • Shortly after Grisilde gives birth to a daughter, Walter gets a notion to test his wife's steadfastness. To do so, he tells Grisilde that he must kill their daughter; then he has his Sergeant take the child away for fostering in Bologna.
  • After Grisilde gives birth to a son, Walter tests her again by taking the child away, saying he plans to kill him. He sends this child, too, to Bologna for fostering.
  • Walter tests Grisilde again by telling her that he plans to remarry. He sends her back to her father's house.
  • Walter arranges for his daughter and son to return to Salucia, spreading the news that he plans to marry the maiden.
  • Walter calls Grisilde to the palace, ordering her to make it ready for his new wife's arrival.
  • After he has witnessed Grisilde's steadfastness this final time, Walter reveals the identity of the young girl and boy to her and reinstates her as his wife.
