Character Role Analysis

Claude Lacombe

If we asked you to picture your favorite mentor character, you'd probably picture someone like Yoda, Morpheus, Gandalf, or Dumbledore. These characters train their herolings to fight their respective antagonists and give them little nuggets of wisdom along the way.

Lacombe is not this type of character. He doesn't teach Roy any form of arts, martial or otherwise, and he's in the dark about the extraterrestrials, too. It's difficult to provide exposition when you have the same questions about what's going on as everyone else.

Yet he's still the mentor. He knows a lot more than Roy or Jillian. He helps Roy on his quest by leading the government in setting up the meeting with the extraterrestrials. He uses his influence to get Roy a spot in the Mayflower Project.

While Lacombe may not have been able to give Roy the answers he was seeking, he did give him the opportunities to find those answers. After all, the best teachers are the ones that teach you to teach yourself, right?
