The Colonel Power Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Sentence)

Quote #1

[…] a pistol on the cushion beside him. (5)

No warlord's outfit would be complete without the essential accessory: a pistol. The colonel is ready to shoot and kill at the drop of a hat. The image of the gun on the pillow shows how he may be gracious, but he's packing a fatal force behind it all.

Quote #2

The moon swung bare on its black cord over the house. (6)

Don't forget: they have the power, and you don't. An image of violent interrogation, of torture, stands above the house to suggest the kinds of work this man does.

Quote #3

[…] a gold bell was on the table for calling the maid. (11)

If the colonel says jump, the answer should be, "How high?" The colonel and his family have a servant at their beck and call. Notice the bell is gold to indicate the power of wealth to dominate others.

Quote #4

The colonel told it [the parrot] to shut up (18)

You get the feeling that nobody gets to speak unless the colonel signs a permission slip first. A parrot speaks out, though, and in English yet. You don't hear him saying hola, do you? Given the colonel's mood at the time, he orders the bird to shut it.

Quote #5

I am tired of fooling around he said. As for the rights of anyone, tell your people they can go f*** themselves. (26-27)

No more Mr. Nice Guy. The colonel drops his polite act and lays it out for his guests. You don't want to push this guy too far. If he's capable of such terrible acts when he's "fooling around," you don't want to see him get all serious and put on his big-man-pants. In case his guests might have any illusions about human rights, the colonel tells them where they can go.
