Character Role Analysis

Merlin

There's pretty much nothing we love more than a little orphan boy, down on his luck, who finds his real dad and makes good in the world.

Well, okay, so Merlin may be the little orphan who finds his dad, but the jury may still be out on whether or not his actions = "making good." However, he's got two things going for him here:

  • He's the first-person narrator. We almost always have some kind of sympathy for those.
  • He's a geeky little wizard just looking for a home (Harry Potter, anyone?).

Even if Merlin does some questionable stuff to go with the flow of Fate, it's hard to fault him for it. He sees his actions part of a noble scheme to protect the fragile baby nation of Britain. That's hard not to root for.
