The Defence of Guenevere

(6) Tree Line

The story in this poem can be hard to follow for a few reasons: first of all, because Guenevere, the speaker, seems to want her story to be difficult to follow, so she uses a lot of confusing imagery instead of telling us what happened in a straightforward way. Second, Morris frequently alludes to mythology and to medieval romance and poetry. Third, some of the language can be difficult, because William Morris was imitating those earlier, medieval forms, which can be a bit tricky for modern readers to follow.
