Once we have a basic understanding of what democracy is, it's pretty easy to understand Hughes's take on freedom in this poem. And since most people have some sort of knowledge of—and appreciation for—having a voice of one's own, Hughes's poem is kind of a walk in the freedom park, relatively speaking.
