How we cite our quotes: (chapter.paragraph)
Quote #1
[Angela to Bella:] "Edward's only human, Bella. He's going to react like any other boy." (6.62)
Angela taps into an emotion, existing in both the natural and supernatural world: jealousy. Jealousy seems to be a universally strong emotion. What makes it so powerful?
Quote #2
[Edward to Bella:] "This is only about you. All I care is that you're safe." (6.171)
Is Edward trying to protect Bella from Jacob's werewolf rage or from her attraction to Jacob?
Quote #3
[Rosalie to Bella:] "You see I was mostly jealous because he wanted you not me." (7.94)
Rosalie still has trouble swallowing that Edward would pick Bella over her, even though she's more beautiful. That attitude makes her seem pretty shallow, don't you think?
Quote #4
[Edward to Bella:] "You're quite adorable when you're jealous. It's surprisingly enjoyable." (8.404)
What could be so enjoyable about your lover being jealous of your past love interests?
Quote #5
I turned my face up for a goodbye peck but Edward took me by surprise, fastening his arms tightly around me and kissing me with… enthusiasm. (10.297)
By parading his passionate kiss with Bella, Edward stakes his claim on Bella in front of Jacob. What does his behavior say about the role of physical intimacy in a relationship?
Quote #6
…without warning, Jacob suddenly licked my face from chin to hairline… then there was Edward, on edge and clearly disappointed. I realized he'd been hoping for a different reaction. (18.188)
What irks Edward more? Furry Jacob licking Bella's face or human Jacob kissing her? Which display of affection is more intimate, in your opinion?
Quote #7
[Edward] balanced the little figurine in his snowy palm. For a fleeting moment, I was afraid. Just the slightest twist of his fingers could crush it into splinters. But of course, Edward wouldn't do that. (19.23)
For a moment there it seems Bella admits to herself and to us that she knows Edward is jealous of Jacob and that he's capable of hurting him. But then she vehemently rejects that thought. Do you think she's trying to protect a false image of Edward?
Quote #8
[Jacob to Edward:] "The jealousy… it has to be eating at you. You can't be as sure of yourself as you seem. Unless you have no emotions at all." (22.102)
Jacob seems to imply that jealousy is a natural human emotion. Is that true and, if so, should you suppress your jealousy or is it natural to act on it?
Quote #9
[Jacob to Edward:] "What if she wants me to [kiss her]?" "If that's what she wants, then I won't object." Edward shrugged, untroubled. (22.178)
So the opposite of jealousy seems to be selflessness. But could Edward's selflessness also be construed as calculated selfishness? Does pure selflessness exist?
