Fallen Prologue Quotes
How we cite the quotes:
(Chapter.Paragraph)
Quote 1
"Warm milk with a spoonful of treacle," he murmured sadly, his back still to her. Then he added sadly, "It helps you sleep." (Prologue. 17)
How does Daniel know this? Oh, yeah—he remembers it from one (or several) of Luce's past lives. Does Luce pick up on this? Nah. She wouldn't be a YA heroine if she did.
Quote 2
"I'm having the strangest sensation," she whispered.
No—was it already too late?
Her eyes narrowed into the shape in his sketch and she came back to him, her lips parted expectantly. "Tell me I'm mad, but I swear I've been right here before…"
So it was too late. He looked up, shivering, and could feel the dark descending. (Prologue.35-37)
From this interaction, it's clear that this is a tipping point for Daniel. Every time Luce says this to him, it must put his guard up, because it's a signal that she might disappear at any moment. That really puts a damper on an otherwise uneventful evening, doesn't it?
Quote 3
"Warm milk with a spoonful of treacle," he murmured sadly, his back still to her. Then he added sadly, "It helps you sleep." (Prologue. 17)
Here we see Daniel (not yet named) showing how much he cares for Luce (also not yet named, since we're in Prologue Land)—and how much he remembers about her character. Learning and remembering someone's eating habits is an intimate thing, and Daniel's concern for Luce's sleeplessness, paired with his wish to help her fall asleep, is especially telling: it suggests that he knows a great deal about her and cares for her a lot. It's also the only instance in the story when Daniel and food are connected; we usually Cam and food connected instead. Basically, Cam + food = potential danger, while Daniel + food = comfort and safety.
Quote 4
In typical Callie fashion, she'd gone on so long that Luce's crap phone cut the message off four lines in. In a way, Luce was almost relieved. She didn't want to read about how everyone from her old school had already forgotten what had happened to her, what she'd done to land herself in this place. (1.23)
It's not even five minutes into her new life at Sword & Cross, and Luce already knows that her social standing at her old school is already ruined beyond belief. She can't let her best friend know any more about her new prison. At least not having a phone might get her away from all the gossip that's flying about her.
