She might seem like an unlikely—or unlikable, we should say—protagonist, but it is clear that this is Hulga's role in the story. Hulga's actions and beliefs drive the action, and the climax is completely built around her experiences. If Hulga's not there when Manley stops by, we're guessing he just carries on his way to the next house.
