Lady Elizabeth Grey

Character Analysis

As love stories go, this one probably won't win any awards anytime soon. Lady Grey's husband has passed away, and her lands have been taken away from her. Women didn't have much power once their hubbies died, but instead of suffering through it, Lady Grey decides she wants to get her lands back and goes to the king for help. When Edward says he'll help her if she helps him (if you know what we mean), she flat out refuses. But then he proposes marriage to her, and she says yes.

Yeah, we're probably not going to call this true love anytime soon.

Lady Grey divides Edward's camp. Warwick and George split off from Edward once he marries her because they think it's such a bad idea; they think it shows Edward's lack of judgment. Richard hates Lady Grey, too. For his part, King Lewis of France changes his team once he finds out that Edward has insulted him by choosing Lady Grey over Lady Bona.

Not everyone understands what Lady Grey is doing with Edward, but she does mark out a place for herself in spite of the naysayers. Hey, she marries the top man and has his baby. Once she pops out a little one, Edward's position on the throne is locked in now that he's got someone to take over when he dies. It's a win-win for both Lady Grey and Edward, right?
