Ed Kennedy Timeline and Summary

  • Ed and his buddies are in a bank when a robbery goes down. Instead of staying quiet in the corner though, Ed runs after the robber and shoots his friend's car. After the robber is arrested, he threatens Ed.
  • One day Ed gets an Ace of Diamonds in the mail with three addresses and times on it. Unsure of whom it's from or what it means, he goes to the first one.
  • When Ed gets to the first address, he sees a woman being raped—but he's too scared to do anything.
  • At the next address, Ed finds an old woman, and winds up talking to her to keeping her company.
  • The third address brings Ed to an insecure girl, struggling with her running. He knows what to do: he'll give her nothing… That's right, he gives her an empty shoebox and she runs like the wind and gains some confidence along the way.
  • Finally Ed decides to go back to the first address and threaten the rapist to leave town.
  • Everything's all peachy. Ed plays cards with his friends and hangs out with his dog, the Doorman, until he gets another card in the mail and knows he has to help three more people.
  • This time, one of the people is a priest with an empty church, so Ed decides to throw a party at the church with free beer to get people to come and fill up the parish.
  • With that under his belt, Ed helps two brothers—the Rose brothers—appreciate each other. How? He beats one up of course, so they can bond. Um, okay.
  • In the park, Ed meets an overwhelmed mom and buys her an ice cream, something that she normally only gets her kids.
  • Too bad people don't really enjoy being beat up, so the Rose brothers find Ed and repay the favor, leaving Ed black and blue for the Annual Sledge Game, a soccer game he's promised he'll play in with his friend, Marv.
  • The cuts and bruises don't stop Ed from helping his team win the game, though, and there's a big party and Marv is thrilled.
  • On the next card, Ed helps a struggling family by getting them new Christmas lights. They dance in the streets and Ed thinks how beautiful people can be. Aw.
  • Ed gets the surprise of his life when he goes to an Italian restaurant for the third person, only to find his mom is there, eating with a guy. She's all dolled up and clearly on a date.
  • He confronts his mom and the guy, and his mom tells him to mind his own business, but Ed figures out that she was with this guy before his dad died. Ouch. Then his mom tells Ed that he's such a disappointment what with sticking around and not doing anything with his life. Double ouch.
  • Next up is a movie theater, where Ed takes his crush Audrey for a film to help out an old-time movie theater owner.
  • While there, Ed gets the final ace—this time, it's of hearts, and the names on it are his three closest friends: Ritchie, Marv, and Audrey.
  • Ed's nervous about helping his friends because he's not sure what they want. He decides to start with Ritchie, and figures out that his friend just wants to want something. So though it might be tough love, Ed tells his buddy to grow up and get a job—to, you know, do something with his life. Hmm… where have we heard that before?
  • Marv isn't so easy to help though. Ed figures out that Marv has a secret child that he's never met, so he takes his friend to the Suzanne's house (she's his baby mama), but things don't go so well when her dad beats Marv up.
  • Not all hope is lost, though, because Suzanne is impressed by Marv's decision to show up and gets in touch with Ed later. Marv finally gets to meet his little girl, and Ed knows he's done the right thing.
  • The last name is Audrey. Ed's completely in love with her, but she doesn't share his feelings, so he goes to her house and dances with her for three minutes. He's not sure if she'll ever feel the same way about him, but a guy's gotta try.
  • Later on at home, Ed gets a card with his address on it. He thought he was done with the cards and messages, but it looks like he's not.
  • Then Audrey surprises him by coming over and saying she loves him. Yippee.
  • A mystery man with a folder shows up and tells Ed that he's the one behind the whole cards and addresses missions. Wait, what?
  • Ed's never seen this guy before so he doesn't understand. The guy explains to him that Ed was so ordinary, so he set this whole adventure up to prove that anyone can care about people and make sacrifices for them. Mission accomplished, we guess.
  • Then Ed realizes he wasn't the messenger; he was the message.
