Anderson Timeline and Summary

  • Anderson meets Mac and Jim when his son, Al, brings them out from town. He doesn't like their ideas, but he knows that the Growers have him in a tight place.
  • Anderson agrees to let the men stay on five empty acres of his farmland. In exchange, the workers will pick his apple crop for him.
  • Anderson gets upset when Al gets beaten and Al's lunch wagon is torched. Mac tries to soothe Anderson by promising to post a guard at the house.
  • When the tension between the workers and the Growers escalates, Mac visits Anderson again.
  • The old man has become hostile to them, and Mac has a hard time placating him with the promise of a guard as he transports his crop.
  • After the fire in the barn that destroys his apples and kills his beloved dogs, Anderson has had enough. He asks the sheriff to evict the workers from his field.
  • Anderson returns from town to find Mac and Jim visiting with Al. He confirms that he's having them evicted—and gives them a tongue-lashing.
  • Anderson tells Mac that his dogs have been killed in the fire, too. Anderson accuses Mac and Jim of lacking understanding: they've never owned anything before.
