Character Analysis
In the sixth chapter of The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud tells about a personal dream in which a man called "Herr P." appears as the Governor of a "castle by the sea" (6.9.11). In the dream, Herr P. suddenly falls down dead. As he interprets the dream, Freud argues that Herr P. was actually a "substitute" for his own self and represented Freud's unconscious fear of death (6.9.13).
