Character Analysis
Tutok is the young Aleutian girl who becomes friends with Karana when the Russian hunters return to the island a second time. She's also the former owner of Rontu, as it turns out. The two girls meet and their relationship grows and changes between Chapters 20 and 22. Tutok becomes friends with Karana when they exchange names and play games together during Tutok's short stay on the island.
The friendship between the two girls is a very important one since it's based on understanding and communication with each other (even though they don't even speak the same language). The friendship is the complete opposite of the relationship between Captain Orlov and Karana's father. The way in which the girls get to know each other hints that the two cultures could come to understand each other without the violence and bloodshed.
