Brody's the man who's been acting like a bullied, frightened kid—unable to confront the mayor, helpless in the face of the shark attacks, afraid of the water. His character's progression throughout the film is symbolic of the untested, uneasy hero (see our "Hero's Journey" section) who needs to leave his ordinary world to face his greatest fear in order to be reborn and transformed.
