Johannine Epsitles (1-3 John) Love Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter: Verse)

Quote #1

Whoever says, "I am in the light," while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness. (1 John 2:9-11, NRSV)

He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. (1 John 2:9-11, KJV)

Love and hate definitely do not go together. In order to be basking in the light of God's awesomeness, you need to be shining the light of love on others, too.

Quote #2

Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world. (1 John 2:15, NRSV)

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15, KJV)

Not all love is created equal. Sure, love your fellow Christians, but don't go around loving "worldly" or "secular" goodies. God is pretty particular about this love stuff.

Quote #3

For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. (1 John 3:11, NRSV)

For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. (1 John 3:11, KJV)

Jesus says the same thing in John's Gospel (which is the book the elder and his community are probably following): "Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another" (John 13:34). Nice quoting, elder.
