Johnny Got His Gun Chapter 6 Summary

  • We're back in the bakery in Los Angeles. Joe is remembering how he used to walk eleven miles every night. With his legs. Which are now gone.
  • Friday nights were busiest at the bakery, and there would be extra hired help from the Midnight Mission, a charity for the homeless.
  • Thus begins the story of Jose, a Puerto Rican worker from the Mission. He's a good worker who wants a steady job. He came to California to get in at a movie studio. The other workers make fun of this ambition.
  • Jose talks about a rich girl in New York who fell in love with him. She was the daughter of a family he was the chauffeur for, and she wanted to marry him, so he had to leave. The others don't believe his story.
  • Eventually, Jose lands a coveted permanent job at the bakery.
  • One day, the fabled girl from New York sends Jose a letter saying that she has come into money of her own and wants to find out where Jose is so that they can get married. The other workers tell Jose to marry her, but Jose insists that he doesn't love her, so he refuses. The girl's existence gives Jose's stories more credibility.
  • After about a month of working in the bakery, Jose comes into work looking worried. He has gotten a job at a studio, but he doesn't want to disrespect Jody Simmons (the boss) by quitting when he had been generous enough to give Jose a job.
  • Everyone at the bakery has a different plan as to how Jose can get himself fired, but Jose doesn't want to offend Jody.
  • The next night, Jose is exhausted when he comes into work because he hasn't slept. This continues for another night, and then Pinky Carson suggests that Jose knock over some pies in front of Jody's office.
  • Jose agrees, but when he pulls it off, Jody forgives Jose's mistake. Pinky suggests that Jose try knocking over an entire rack of pies, because clearly the solution is more pies.
  • The next night, everyone anticipates the disaster. Someone has sent Jody a box of flowers without a card.
  • Jose knocks over an entire rack of pies, and Jody is furious. He fires Jose on the spot. Jose is sad and remorseful that he has disrespected Jody in such a way.
  • Rudy asks Jose if he knows anything about the flowers on Jody's desk. Jose admits that he sent them.
  • The next day, Jose doesn't show up for his paycheck. Instead, Jody receives a money order from Jose paying for the pies.
  • Joe comes out of his memory trying to talk to Jose. Then he realizes where he is.
