Oh, Kareen. You may not be our first, but you are the Girl We Left Behind. Joe may be a bit of player, but Kareen is the girl he keeps thinking back to as the one he wanted to live his life with. She comes to represent the life he could have had if the war hadn't disrupted everything and destroyed Joe's chance to have a normal life.
