Sheriff Sam Guidy in A Lesson Before Dying

By Ernest J. Gaines

Sheriff Sam Guidy

The sheriff is Edna's husband and Henri Pichot's brother-in-law. He tries to keep a handle on things at the courthouse, and is especially worried about the looming threat of "aggravation", but he's actually a pretty agreeable guy in the end. He's kind of like the school librarian; his bark is worse than his bite.
