Al Capone Does My Shirts Part 1, Chapter 11

By Gennifer Choldenko

Part 1, Chapter 11

The Best in the Country

  • Moose's mom has a very blank reaction to the news, and since his dad can't join her to get Natalie, Moose accompanies her.
  • On the boat, Moose thinks about all the times that they've tried to help Natalie—she's been through so many treatments and doctors who told them that they could help.
  • There was one treatment she went through at UCLA where she was put through all kinds of tests. In the end, though, the doctors wouldn't help. The family went through a really tough time after that.
  • Once at the school, Moose's mom tries to ask Mr. Purdy to let Natalie stay, but the school's pretty insistent that she needs to go home.
  • Moose is amazed by how hard his mom tries to help Natalie—she seems to stop at nothing in hopes that something will help her daughter.
  • Mr. Purdy writes down the name of a doctor who might be able to help them. He tells them that there was an incident where Natalie woke up early and screamed for almost an hour.
  • He then leads them into the other room, where Natalie is waiting, counting the stitches on the seat of her chair. Moose and his mom help her out of the room.
