Phebe in All the King's Men

By Robert Penn Warren

Annabelle is a character in the Cass Mastern subplot. Phebe is Annabelle's slave and the person who finds Duncan Trice's wedding ring under his pillow after he's shot himself. It is implied that Phebe knows the real reasons behind Duncan's suicide (i.e., Annabelle and Cass's affair). Tragically, Annabelle punished Phebe for her discovery by selling her "downriver" into sexual servitude. For more about Phebe, see our discussion of "The Ring" under "Symbols, Imagery, Allegory."
